Top destinations to travel solo

It’s safe to say that any form of solo travel, whether you’re travelling solo as part of a tour or completely alone is just as much about discovering yourself as much as it is about discovering a new country. So if  you’ve decided to take the plunge and venture out on your own, where do you go? We’ve put together a list of our favourite destinations to travel to below.

1. The Cinque Terre

Though it is commonly known to be a romantic destination to travel to, Italy is also the perfect destination to visit as a solo traveller. Bursting with style, culture and incredible cuisine, there’s a bit of everything for all types of travellers. Whether you’re after more adventurous activities such as hiking and biking or are looking to experience the city life, Italy has it all.

A top experience we recommend is hiking or walking the 11km picturesque coastal trail that links the five colourful towns of the Cinque Terre in Italy. These charming seaside villages each have their own trails and gems to discover such as the town of Riomaggiore which currently has 20 hiking trails available to take on.

2. Croatia

Not only was is it the filming location for HBO’s Game of Thrones and runners up of the 2018 World Cup, but the sunny country of Croatia has been booming in tourism for a number of years and is fast becoming a popular destination for budding solo travellers. Wander past Croatia’s diverse landscapes, mountains and beaches not forgetting to taste the many popular dishes on offer, such as Goulash and Strukli. Lovers of history and architecture should also pay a visit to the bewitching city of Dubrovnik which is known for its old town and nearby surrounding cafes.

3. Costa Rica

When Central America comes to mind, many tend to think of Mexico as their first choice destination. And while Mexico is a beautiful country in itself, we believe that Costa Rica is a Central American wonder you could happily venture to and experience on your own as a solo traveller. With plenty of hostels available and friendly locals around, travelling across striking landscapes, cloud forests and sandy beaches won’t be a problem. Top places to visit in Costa Rica include the town of Tamarindo which us a popular destination for surfing.

4. Thailand

The great thing about travelling to Thailand is that it’s not as daunting as it may initially seem. With so many other travellers visiting (it is a very popular destination for backpackers and holiday goers alike) it’s easy to meet new people and make new friends. Best of all, Thailand is bursting with so much to see and do. Being a relatively affordable country to explore means you are able to do everything from island hopping to trying new foods without breaking the bank.

5. Prague

Prague may not be the first choice European country to visit for the first time, and that in itself should be a reason for you to go. For a solo traveller, Prague pretty much has everything you could want out of a trip to Europe – culture, a historical old town and amazing eats at affordable prices. One of the great things about Prague is that it is a also a relatively safe and easy city to travel around as it has lower levels of crime rates in comparison to more popular European cities. Highlights to explore include a visit to Prague castle, a walk around Wenceslas square and a visit to the astronomical clock in the centre of the old town.
