Asia is perfect for Solo Travellers

Southeast Asia is a well-trodden destination for keen travellers making it an ideal place for first-time solo travellers. Travelling in a group tour means although you will be travelling Asia alone, you will also meet new friends from around the world.

When travelling on your own as a woman in Asia the most important thing to be aware of is religious and cultural differences. In temples you will be asked to cover up if you are wearing tops revealing your shoulders and chest or if your skirts or shorts are too short. In Buddhist cultures including in Thailand and Laos it is forbidden for monks to touch women.

Travelling alone to Asia is a fantastic experience. You will meet others from all corners of the world and there is something for everyone.

Remember, when you are travelling, however you identify, you should always have the same safety measures that you would at home. Don’t go to unfamiliar destinations at night, do not leave your drink and don’t carry valuables.

Top tips for solo travel in Asia

1) Narrow it down!

Asia is HUGE (the biggest continent to be precise) so unless you are off travelling for years (in which case we are very jealous) than the chances are you won’t see it all in one go. Many solo travellers who want to explore and experience Southeast Asia will combine Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.

We love these solo-ish Asian tours tours with G Adventure.

2) Check local rules and customs

In many Asian destinations there are many rules and customs to be aware of before you travel. For instance in Thailand it is illegal to fold or throw a banknote on the floor as it shows you are disrespecting the Royal Family which are depicted on the currency. In temples you must always dress appropriately and often take off your shoes before entering.

3) Try the local food

From steaming bowls of Pho in Vietnam to softshell crab in Singapore, Asia is home to some of the most delicious cuisine in the world. Travellers who love new tastes and flavours will have a riot of a time exploring street markets and cafes offering new and wonderful delicacies. Even if it means ordering something a little spicier than you would at home, we recommend trying food you wouldn’t normally try at home on your Asia holiday!
